How We Make Our Sculptures
We use the ancient art of Lost Wax Casting to hand cast your sculpture in solid bronze metal, never resin or ‘cold cast’ bronze. Each time a piece is cast, a new mould is created and then destroyed, ensuring that every sculpture you purchase from us is utterly unique. Each piece is individually numbered by hand, indicating its specific casting number within the edition, and bears the artist’s signature, and our ‘NF’ maker’s mark.
Creation of the Master Mould
A single-use mould is meticulously created from the original artwork. This is the heart of the process—every detail captured here will be perfectly replicated in bronze. Molten wax is then poured into this mould, creating a precise duplicate of the artist’s original sculpture.
The Bronze Pour
The wax model is coated in a ceramic shell and then fired in a kiln, a process that melts and “loses” the wax. This creates a hollow ceramic mould. Molten bronze, heated to an incredible 1200°C/2200°F, is immediately poured into this mould. Once cooled, the ceramic shell is carefully broken away, revealing the raw bronze sculpture inside.
Hand Finishing & Patina
The raw bronze sculpture is expertly hand-finished by our skilled artisans. This final stage is where the sculpture’s character comes to life. Our craftsman applies heat and a chemical patina to the sculpture, creating a unique colour and effect. Finally, a protective wax coating is carefully applied and polished, giving the sculpture a beautiful, lustrous finish.
Authenticity & Numbering
Every piece is numbered by hand, authenticating its place within the limited edition and ensuring your sculpture is truly unique. It also bears our ‘NF’ maker’s mark, and the artist’s signature, a final mark of authenticity and quality.
