Product Details
This stunning life size hare is the charismatic new addition to Sue Maclaurin’s collection of foundry bronze sculptures for the garden.
‘Garden Seated Hare’ beautifully captures the strength and sensitivity of this mystical animal, in the fleeting moment that its attention has been caught and fixed on something intriguing somewhere in the distance.
This sculpture is cast by hand in our British foundry, using the traditional lost wax method of casting bronze. Every casting takes six weeks to create and bears the artist’s signature and its own unique edition number. As every sculpture is cast using a new mould that is specially created for that casting and subsequently destroyed, every casting is satisfyingly and reassuringly unique.
As this has been cast in foundry bronze (NOT resin!), Garden Seated Hare can be displayed either outside or in, making a stunning addition to any lawn, patio or fireplace. Whether displayed on its own, or with its equally striking companion, the Garden Alert Hare, this sensational sculpture is guaranteed to start lively conversations wherever it is displayed, and we challenge you to walk past it without giving it at least a little stroke!
Each casting of Garden Seated Hare bears the signature of the artist, Sue Maclaurin, as well as our NF maker’s mark and its own unique edition number. This, combined with the artist signed certificate of authenticity is your guarantee that this is a genuine Nelson & Forbes bronze casting of an original sculpture by Sue Maclaurin that she has personally approved.
It arrives encased in a bespoke, handmade timber crate (shown in the last photograph), carefully packed to ensure that you receive it in pristine condition.

How We Make Our Sculptures
We use the ancient art of Lost Wax Casting to hand cast your sculpture in solid bronze metal, never resin or ‘cold cast’ bronze. Each time a piece is cast, a new mould is created and then destroyed, ensuring that every sculpture you purchase from us is utterly unique. Each piece is individually numbered by hand, indicating its specific casting number within the edition, and bears the artist’s signature, and our ‘NF’ maker’s mark.
Creation of the Master Mould
A single-use mould is meticulously created from the original artwork. This is the heart of the process—every detail captured here will be perfectly replicated in bronze. Molten wax is then poured into this mould, creating a precise duplicate of the artist’s original sculpture.
The Bronze Pour
The wax model is coated in a ceramic shell and then fired in a kiln, a process that melts and “loses” the wax. This creates a hollow ceramic mould. Molten bronze, heated to an incredible 1200°C/2200°F, is immediately poured into this mould. Once cooled, the ceramic shell is carefully broken away, revealing the raw bronze sculpture inside.
Hand Finishing & Patina
The raw bronze sculpture is expertly hand-finished by our skilled artisans. This final stage is where the sculpture’s character comes to life. Our craftsman applies heat and a chemical patina to the sculpture, creating a unique colour and effect. Finally, a protective wax coating is carefully applied and polished, giving the sculpture a beautiful, lustrous finish.
Authenticity & Numbering
Every piece is numbered by hand, authenticating its place within the limited edition and ensuring your sculpture is truly unique. It also bears our ‘NF’ maker’s mark, and the artist’s signature, a final mark of authenticity and quality.
